This gallery addresses trans-Saharan captivity, markets and movement with careful attention to the words it uses. Enslaved people are historical and human subjects, not categories to be projected automatically onto living descendants. Roles, places and periods are connected to specific sources. The museum also presents the limits of institutional archives and the memories that survived beyond them. A history of commerce does not justify a personal attribution without evidence. Dignity, provenance and the right to correction accompany every publication.
